What is an Employee Matching Gifts Program?

A: Many companies and corporations offer this program as a benefit to their employees and retirees who wish to donate to non-profit charitable organizations. Your employer pledges to match your contribution to qualifying organizations. Many employers also provide grants to non-profit organizations for employees who volunteer their services.

How can I find out if my employer offers a matching gift program?

A: Ask your company’s human resource department or payroll department if your employer offers a matching gift program.

Does my matched gift qualify my company or me for special recognition?

A: Yes. You will be credited with your gift, plus the matched amount by your employer.

How much of my donation will my company match?

A: Rules and regulations vary from company to company, but some employers will match your donation 1:1 up to $1000 or more a year. If you donate $100, your employer will give another $100. Some companies may also match in-kind gifts, or gifts of products and equipment.

How do I participate in my Employer Matching Gifts Program?

  • A: Check with your company’s human resources or
    payroll department to see whether it offers a matching gift program.

  • Ask for donation guidelines and a list of eligible charities if
    your company does offer a matching gift program.

  • Watch for matching opportunities through community and internet fundraising
    efforts if your company doesn’t offer a matching gift program.

  • Decide how much you want to donate.

  • Donate through the matching gift program, filling out the appropriate forms
    to ensure that the match is donated.

After I submit the matching gift form, will all my future contributions be matched too?

A: No. You must submit a matching gift form with EACH contribution that you make to Northern Lights Health Foundation. You can request several forms from your employer and send the form in with your donation each time you make it.

Must I be a full-time active employee to have my contributions matched?

A: No. Many companies match gifts from part time employee and retirees too. Some companies also match gifts from spouses and directors, as well as matching volunteer hours.

Can I designate my gift to a specific area?

A: Yes. Although we have an annual campaign focused on a specific high priority need within the health centre, you can direct donations to the specific areas and facilities that matter to you most.

Is my gift tax deductible?

A: Yes, to the full amount allowed by the Canada Revenue Agency. The Northern Lights Health Foundation is a registered charity. Gifts over $10 will receive a tax receipt. Monthly donors will receive one consolidated tax receipt, which will be mailed early in the year for the previous year’s monthly donations. Foundations and registered charities do not receive a tax receipt.
